Former Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson has revealed his view on the current Lions’ offense led by quarterback Jared Goff. The 2007 first-round pick appeared on the Pat McAfee show on Wednesday, discussing his time in Detroit and the current state of the team.

Johnson, who played nine seasons with the Lions, was asked by McAfee his thoughts on the team’s Super Bowl prospects. The 40-year-old responded:

“I mean, we know we have the juice. Just like last game, you know, we had a little bit of a struggle. But we saw there’s this little stress there over the last month where they got hurt on offense, and they’re really moving the ball up and down the field, both running the ball and passing the ball. If we cannot continue to do that, we get stuck on one facet and our days are numbered.”

The Lions are second in the NFC North, standing at 5-3 after eight games. The Lions were beaten in their last game by division rivals, the Minnesota Vikings, in a tight contest.

Jared Goff addresses concerns as he’s set to surpass personal sack record

Jared Goff was sacked five times, bringing his tally this season to 18 and setting him on course to beat his career high.

The quarterback’s personal record for sacks in a season is 35, a figure he reached in 2021. However, at his current pace, he’s projected to concede 38 sacks this campaign. Aware of the challenge, Jared Goff has expressed commitment to solving it with the help of his teammates. He said following last Sunday’s loss to the Vikings:

“You don’t want to have that. You want to limit that as much as you can. And I think the last two weeks is not indicative of who we are. I’ll try to get rid of the ball a little faster to help those guys, and I know they want to play better too.”

Detroit has lost more games this season than it did throughout last season, when it finished 15-2. The Lions also entered the playoffs with the No. 1 seed in the NFC. If the Lions are to repeat this feat this season, they need to experience a turnaround from their first half of the season.

The Lions’ next opponents are conference rivals, the Washington Commanders, against whom they will be hoping to get back to winning ways.
