The Ohio State Buckeyes are days away from playing in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic against the Miami Hurricanes. But, the play-calling arrangements will look slightly different than they have all season.
Coach Ryan Day met the media Monday to discuss the matchup, revealing how much offensive coordinator Brian Hartline will be involved before officially taking over the head-coaching role at the University of South Florida.
“Everybody will be involved with the play calling, and ultimately be my decision, you know, what calls can go into the game, in this game," Day told reporters. "Kind of want to take that off of Brian’s plate as we head into the playoffs, because he got so much going on with what he’s trying to do, but, but he’s working hard and we’re just going to keep evaluating it every day to see what’s best for the group.”
There isn't tension between either coach. Rather, Day wants to make Hartline's duties easier before his focus shits entirely to being a head coach.
"And so, you know, right now, as we move forward, he’s coaching the receivers, you know, it’s a lot on his plate. It’s a lot, you know, to manage. So we’re kind of taking it day to day right now, just in terms of as we move forward going into the game, you know, it’ll be a group effort."
That "group effort" is going to allow Day to prepare for the future, he said.
"Kinda wanted to take that off of Brian’s plate as we head into the playoffs,” Day said about the move to work exclusively with receivers.
It appears it will be the last time Day addresses Hartline's involvement until the season officially ends.
For now, though, the focus remains beating the Hurricanes to keep the season alive.
