DJ and record producer Diplo has sparked social media debate by revisiting the longstanding discussion about his rumored connections with Katy Perry and former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The artist recently shared a new selfie showing two well-known faces in the same photo: Justin Trudeau standing beside him and Katy Perry subtly appearing in the background. Along with the image, there was a caption reading “the one that got away,” a reference to the 2010 hit single by Katy Perry.

The post quickly ignited a discussion on social media, with fans noticing a subtle layer of humor in the words the DJ-producer selected. Some of the initial reactions focused on Perry's appearance in the background and what seemed to be an ironic setup of the shot.

Several remarks displayed sharp wit and inventive phrasing.

These early responses generated shared amusement across the internet, with most fans viewing the picture as an accidental pop-culture crossover. The jokes were further stretched as reactions continued, and another wave of comments added to the absurdity of the photo's premise.

@diplo 😭😭😭 this is hilarious, yall have no sense of humor

@diplo Messy but I'm here for it

Finally, the caption was not only a mention of Perry's most famous single but also reignited internet interest in the playful public image of the record producer.

Alleged connection between Diplo, Katy Perry, and Justin Trudeau

The recent viral incident involving Diplo, Katy Perry, and Justin Trudeau blends romance and new rumors. It first gained attention when Diplo, during a October 7, 2025, episode of the Smart Girl Dumb Questions podcast, joked that he had dated Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau, then immediately clarified and later mentioned:

"Oh, I did date Trudeau too," Diplo said in response. "That was a weird one though... because I'm not into politicians."

The record producer and Perry’s romantic connection is well documented. The pair was briefly involved from April to November 2014, and their short-term relationship was widely covered by entertainment magazines like People.

Though their relationship concluded on a friendly note, it was the topic of numerous pop-culture jokes afterward, especially when Perry ranked her exes in a 2017 livestream, in which she classified Diplo as the third-ranked, following her boyfriends.

By 2025, Perry was making headlines for her rumored romance with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, a rumor that started after the two were seen together multiple times during the summer, including on a dinner date in Paris and a yacht trip off the Amalfi Coast. Elle reported that the two were “quietly seeing each other” and were “growing close.”

Although widely shared on social media, Diplo's post does not suggest any romantic connection between the three. His history with Katy Perry only includes their brief relationship in 2014, which ended amicably, and Perry has been linked to Justin Trudeau by various publications. However, neither party has officially confirmed this.

The comment made by the record producer about dating Trudeau was a joke and doesn't count as a real confession. So far, no source shows any current or past romantic interest between Diplo and Trudeau, and the selfie is mostly a joke and not a sign of an actual relationship.
