Nico Harrison labels himself ‘bold’ after Mavs draft Duke Blue Devils basketball star Cooper Flagg

When Adam Silver stepped up to the podium to read the Dallas Mavericks' first overall pick, a small part of basketball fans across the country thought, “What if Nico Harrison did it again?”

The Mavs GM became the worst kind of celebrity overnight after dealing Luka Doncic in one of the most baffling trades in sports history, and a few months later, somehow lucked into the top spot of the NBA Draft.

Harrison went chalk-taking Duke phenom Cooper Flagg, pairing the rookie with Anthony Davis in one of the league's most dangerous frontcourts.

Flagg's arrival has almost negated Doncic's departure, but Harrison's nonsensical comments refuse to let him off the hook.

During a post-draft press conference, Harrison patted himself on the back with an astonishing lack of self-awareness.

"Fortune favors the bold," Harrison said. "So exciting things fell our way."

Harrison's victory lap after his team has less than a two-percent chance of landing Flagg is absurd.

Does he think the masses now think the Doncic trade was a calculated risk, as if he had anything to do with the ping-pong balls bouncing the franchise's way?

Dallas has a fairly deep roster but is overreliant on a soon-to-be 34-year-old Kyrie Irving, coming off a torn ACL, with a logjam at center. There are moves the front office has to make to turn the Mavs into a genuine title contender, and it's difficult to imagine fans think Harrison is the right man for the job.

Perhaps he should stop patting himself on the back and try to get a point guard to get his new superstar the ball.
