Blue Jays Max Scherzer gives key update on health after return start

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Max Scherzer returned to the mound on June 25 after months of dealing with a thumb injury.

Scherzer left his first start of the season on March 29 after three innings due to a thumb injury. He had been rehabbing it since then, as he kept having issues with it after throwing.

Yet, in his return start on June 25, Scherzer pitched 5 innings and gave a positive update the day after the outing, according to Blue Jays insider Arden Zwelling.

“Blue Jays manager John Schneider says Max Scherzer told him “he feels better today than he did the day after his triple-A rehab start.” Scherzer felt he could’ve thrown another 10 pitches Tuesday (he threw 83). If he continues trending this way, he’ll pitch longer next time out,” Zwelling wrote on X.

Scherzer signed a one-year, $15.5 million deal with the Blue Jays to be the team’s fifth starter and add another veteran leader to the clubhouse.

In his return start, Scherzer allowed 3 runs on 6 hits while walking 3 and striking out 4 in 5 innings against the Cleveland Guardians. Although it was his first start in months, Scherzer still thought he could have done better.

“I was a little rusty,” Scherzer said. “I pitched good; I didn’t pitch great.”

Scherzer is a three-time Cy Young Award winner, an eight-time All-Star, and a two-time World Series champion.
