NFL fatigue rankings reveal major hidden disadvantage for Texans, 49ers

1 hour ago 3

NFL strength of schedule discussions typically begin with opponents. The Houston Texans and San Francisco 49ers could discover that when and where they play are just as important as who appears on the other sideline.

Covers.com has released its 2026 NFL Fatigue Index, an analysis of all 544 team-game appearances during the regular season. The study attempts to measure the toll created by physical recovery time, travel, sleep disruption and changes to a team’s internal body clock.

Houston received the highest projected season fatigue score at 96.4, narrowly ahead of San Francisco at 96.2. The Los Angeles Chargers were third at 93.9, followed by the New Orleans Saints at 91.9 and Las Vegas Raiders at 90.1. The Carolina Panthers landed at the opposite end of the rankings with a league-low score of 32.1. Tampa Bay had the second-lightest burden at 33.7, while Cleveland ranked third at 35.9.

The index does not predict records or point margins. A score of 96.4 also does not mean the Texans will be 96.4 percent fatigued. It represents the accumulated scheduling burden each team is projected to carry into its 17 games.

Texans face massive disadvantage in London

Houston’s difficult schedule is driven by more than one trip, but its Week 6 game against Jacksonville presents the clearest example of schedule inequality. The Texans will face the Jaguars in London on Oct. 18 at 9:30 a.m. ET. Houston enters that game with a projected fatigue burden of 37.4, the second-highest mark among all 544 team-game appearances.

Jacksonville’s score for the same game is only 5.8. The difference comes from what the teams will do before kickoff. The Jaguars are scheduled to play in London during the previous week and are expected to remain overseas. That gives Jacksonville additional time to recover from its initial flight and adjust to the local time zone.

Houston must make the international trip immediately before the game.

The Texans return home to face the New York Giants the following week before reaching their Week 8 bye. Later road games against the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders also contribute to Houston’s league-leading season score. The schedule creates an unusual situation in London. The Texans and Jaguars will play in the same stadium at the same time, but they will arrive with dramatically different travel and recovery circumstances.

49ers will travel nearly 38,000 miles

No team is scheduled to travel farther than San Francisco. The 49ers are projected to cover approximately 37,900 miles while crossing 58 time zones. Those trips give San Francisco the highest sleep-disruption burden in the league.

The 49ers opened the season against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia, but that historic journey is not projected to be their most difficult fatigue spot. A Week 7 trip to face the Atlanta Falcons at 1 p.m. ET carries San Francisco’s highest individual burden at 20.1. Another 1 p.m. ET road game against the New York Giants in Week 13 ranks second on the team’s schedule.

San Francisco is also scheduled to play Minnesota in Mexico City during Week 11.

Travel distance is only part of the problem for the NFL’s West Coast teams. Early games in the Eastern time zone can force players to compete when their bodies are accustomed to it being late morning. All four Pacific Time teams finished inside the Fatigue Index’s top 10. San Francisco ranked second, the Chargers third, the Rams seventh and the Seahawks 10th.

The Chargers’ three most difficult spots are all 1 p.m. ET road games against Buffalo, Tampa Bay and Miami. Las Vegas, which ranked fifth overall, faces similar body-clock challenges during early games at New England and Cleveland.

Paris game creates NFL’s toughest fatigue spot

The Saints’ Week 7 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Paris received the highest individual fatigue score of the season at 41.1. That one appearance accounts for approximately 45 percent of New Orleans’ entire projected season burden. The Paris matchup also makes up about 46 percent of Pittsburgh’s total.

New Orleans received a well-timed Week 8 bye immediately after the international game. The Saints also have the second-easiest opponent schedule based on Covers’ market-adjusted strength measurement, potentially offsetting some of their travel disadvantage.

European games occupy the first 11 positions among the index’s 25 most demanding team-game appearances.

That trend reflects the NFL’s continued international expansion. Teams are projected to travel a combined 632,000 miles during the 2026 season, which Covers identified as the most travel-intensive season in league history.

Fatigue could become overlooked NFL betting factor

The Fatigue Index presents an alternative way to evaluate schedule difficulty. A team can face manageable opponents and still encounter a difficult stretch because of short rest, cross-country travel or poorly timed kickoffs. Another team can have a demanding opponent schedule but benefit from limited travel and favorable recovery windows.

Those differences will not automatically determine games. Talented teams regularly overcome inconvenient schedules, and organizations can reduce the effects through careful travel planning. San Francisco provided an immediate example by arriving in Melbourne a week before its opener. The 49ers beat the Rams 27-7 after Los Angeles chose to arrive much later.

Still, the index identifies situations worth monitoring before injuries, standings and playoff pressure begin influencing the season.

Houston and San Francisco possess enough talent to overcome their schedules. The numbers suggest both teams will have to defeat more than their weekly opponents to do it.
