The New York Giants' offensive line remains a work in progress, although better results are expected in 2025. The healthy return of left tackle Andrew Thomas allows Jermaine Eluemunor to kick back to right tackle, which is the position he was signed to fill in 2024 free agency.
Two starting spots improve by Thomas coming back.
Still, the interior offensive line could use an upgrade, and that's where former Pro Bowl standout Brandon Scherff comes in.
Scherff played the last three seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars after becoming one of the NFL's elite guards during his first seven seasons in Washington. And while his play in Jacksonville hasn't been quite to the level that it was previously, he's still managed to start all 51 games he suited up for with the Jaguars.
Now, at 33 and in the twilight of his career, Scherff remains unsigned, looking for his third and likely final team.
According to the folks at Pro Football Network, the Giants should give him a call, especially after not signing a starting upgrade in free agency so far.
"After drafting just a single offensive lineman — Purdue guard Marcus Mbow in the fifth round — the Giants also exited the draft with one of the worst lines," PFN wrote. "Apart from left tackle Andrew Thomas and center John Michael Schmitz Jr., the Giants could reasonably look for an upgrade at the other three spots.
"Of course, late free agency doesn’t bring many quality starting options. Scherff might be an exception to that rule, though he’s 33 and last made the Pro Bowl in 2021. Still, he didn’t allow a single sack in 592 pass-blocking snaps this season."
Adding Scherff would likely spell the end of Greg Van Roten's time as a Giants starter. He struggled in his first year in the lineup, logging 1,121 snaps and earning a 63.4 grade from Pro Football Focus.
Scherff would offer an immediate upgrade, even for the short term, for a New York Giants offensive line that, at some point in 2025, will be charged with protecting rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart.
