There are Fourth of July traditions, and then there is the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. The annual Coney Island spectacle has become one of America’s strangest and most beloved holiday sporting events, turning hot dogs, buns and the Mustard Belt into must-watch television. While plenty of competitors have stepped onto the stage at Surf and Stillwell Avenues, two names changed the event forever: Takeru Kobayashi and Joey Chestnut.
Kobayashi helped launch competitive eating into the mainstream in the early 2000s. Chestnut later took it to another level, building the most dominant résumé the sport has ever seen.

How Takeru Kobayashi changed the contest forever
Before Joey Chestnut became the face of the event, Takeru Kobayashi turned the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest into appointment viewing. Kobayashi stunned the competitive eating world in 2001 when he ate 50 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes. The previous official contest record was 25.125, meaning Kobayashi nearly doubled the mark in one appearance.
He also changed the technique of the sport. Kobayashi popularized separating the hot dog from the bun, dunking the bun in water and eating at a pace no one else had previously matched. From 2001 through 2006, Kobayashi won six consecutive Nathan’s titles and became the sport’s first true global superstar.
Joey Chestnut’s unmatched Nathan’s dominance
Chestnut first threatened Kobayashi’s throne in 2006, when he ate 52 hot dogs and buns but still finished second. One year later, everything changed. In 2007, Chestnut ate 66 hot dogs and buns to beat Kobayashi and begin one of the greatest runs of dominance in any sport. Chestnut won eight consecutive titles from 2007 through 2014 before Matt Stonie stunned him in 2015.
That upset only seemed to reset Chestnut. He came back in 2016, became the first competitor to reach 70 hot dogs in 10 minutes and then kept rewriting the record book. Chestnut set the all-time mark in 2021 with 76 hot dogs and buns.
Chestnut missed the 2024 contest during a sponsorship dispute, allowing Patrick Bertoletti to win the men’s title with 58 hot dogs and buns. Chestnut returned in 2025 and reclaimed the Mustard Belt by eating 70.5.
Miki Sudo became the queen of Coney Island
The women’s competition has also been defined by dominance. Sonya Thomas won the first three women’s titles from 2011 through 2013, but Miki Sudo took over beginning in 2014. Sudo has won every women’s contest she has entered since then, with the lone interruption coming in 2021, when she missed the event while pregnant.
Sudo set the women’s record in 2024 by eating 51 hot dogs and buns, surpassing the previous mark of 48.5 she posted in 2020. Her 2025 total of 33 was well below her record pace, but it was still enough to secure another championship.
Biggest upsets in Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest history
Matt Stonie shocks Joey Chestnut in 2015
The biggest modern upset came in 2015, when Matt Stonie ended Chestnut’s eight-year winning streak. Stonie ate 62 hot dogs and buns, while Chestnut finished with 60.
Chestnut responded by winning the next eight contests he entered.
Patrick Bertoletti wins without Chestnut in 2024
With Chestnut absent in 2024, Bertoletti took full advantage. He ate 58 hot dogs and buns to win his first Nathan’s title.
While Chestnut’s absence dominated the conversation, Bertoletti’s total would have been competitive in many years.
Kobayashi announces a new era in 2001
Kobayashi’s 2001 win was not just an upset. It was a complete reset of the sport.
His 50 hot dogs and buns nearly doubled the previous record and immediately made him the most feared eater in the world.

Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest records
The men’s record belongs to Joey Chestnut, who ate 76 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes in 2021. The women’s record belongs to Miki Sudo, who ate 51 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes in 2024.
Both marks remain the standard at Coney Island.
Why the contest remains a Fourth of July staple
The Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest has lasted because it is more than a competition. It is part sport, part spectacle and part Independence Day tradition. The setting is iconic. The personalities are larger than life. The records are absurd. And every July 4, the event delivers exactly what fans expect: chaos, pageantry and a race to see who can survive 10 minutes of pure competitive eating madness.
From Kobayashi’s revolution to Chestnut’s dynasty to Sudo’s dominance, the Mustard Belt has become one of the most recognizable prizes in American sports entertainment.
