Joburg Super Kings captain Faf du Plessis credited one of MS Dhoni's iconic run-outs for the franchise's thrilling super over win against the Durban's Super Giants at the Wanderers on January 1. Wicket-keeper Donovan Ferreira ran out Eathan Bosch in the final delivery of the regulation contest to keep the scores level.

Faf du Plessis' 30-ball 47 and Ferreira's blistering cameo helped the team post 205-4 after being put into bat first. The match went down to the wire after Evan Jones' blistering 17-ball 43-run knock, leaving Durban 19 runs to win off the last two overs.

Richard Gleeson bowled a stellar penultimate over, conceding only four runs. But the opponents came back in the final over after Eathan Bosch slammed Wiaan Mulder for a six in the second ball of the final over. The scores were level after Simon Harmer hit a four off the penultimate ball.

However, he failed to make contact with the final delivery, forcing the pair to scamper across for a quick bye. Donovan Ferreira was at his alert best as he already had one glove off, and executed a perfect direct hit to take the game into the super over.

After Joburg Super Kings polished off the six-run target in the super over, du Plessis recalls formulating the plan for the final ball, keeping MS Dhoni's iconic run out against Bangladesh in the 2016 T20 World Cup in mind.

"I remember there was a game a long time ago, when MS Dhoni was standing behind the stumps for India. I think it was against Bangladesh in a World Cup, and I remember the guy bowling almost like a cut ball across him," du Plessis said in the post-match presentation (via Jio Hotstar). "So, I just told him (Muder), just go short, across him, and hopefully we get a wicket. I was not banking on a run out. So, we are bowling for run outs now," he added.

Joburg Super Kings are cruising in SA20 2026 as they have now racked three consecutive wins to kick-start the season, and are placed at the top of the table. They completed the double over Durban as they bowled them out for 86 in the reverse fixture at Newlands.

MS Dhoni's generational run out handed India a one-run win over Bangladesh in 2016 T20 World Cup

While the legendary former India skipper has several iconic run outs over the course of his career, his effort against Bangladesh during the 2016 T20 World Cup in Bengaluru, stands apart.

With two runs needed off the final ball, Shuvagata Hom missed Hardik Pandya's delivery well outside the off-stump. While MS Dhoni collected the ball behind the stumps, he did not attempt a direct hit to catch the incoming Mustafizur Rahman short of his crease.

Instead, he set off on a sprint and dislodged the bails in the nick of time to avoid the scores being level and the game being sent into a super over. The run-out is often regarded as one of the moments where Dhoni's presence of mind ended up being the difference maker.
