William Jewell College running back MicahJo Barnett died Saturday after suffering a medical emergency during his team's first game of the season in Liberty, Missouri, the school announced.
Barnett's medical emergency happened on the sidelines during the first quarter after he had scored a touchdown in the game, the NCAA said in a release.
William Jewell's game against Fort Lewis College was then suspended and later canceled following the news of Barnett's death.

Barnett, a running back for William Jewell College, a Division II program, died on Saturday after suffering a medical emergency during his team's first game of the season. William Jewell shared a post to social media around 4:15 p.m. ET on Saturday confirming Barnett's death, also saying that a vigil tribute would be held that night.

According to a release from the NCAA, Barnett "had a medical emergency on the sideline in the first quarter" of the game between William Jewell and Fort Lewis College. He had already scored a touchdown in the game. The incident occurred at Greene Stadium in Liberty, Missouri; the game was canceled after initially being postponed.
Harold R. Kuntz of Fox4 News Kansas City reported on Saturday that Barnett had "suffered seizure like symptoms" on the sideline of the game. Jewell president Dave Van Horn also spoke about Barnett's death on Saturday:

"Fort Lewis College Athletics extends its deepest condolences to the William Jewell College community following the tragic passing of a Cardinals football student-athlete, MicahJo Barnett," Fort Lewis College Director of Athletics Shawn Jakubowski said in a statement, per CBS News. "Our hearts are with his family, friends, teammates, coaches, and everyone at William Jewell during this incredibly difficult time. Fort Lewis College counseling staff is reaching out to our football team to ensure our players and staff have the support they need."
Barnett was a junior majoring in business administration. According to CBS News, he was from Liberty, where William Jewell's campus is located, and as a high school senior, he helped lead Liberty North High School to a state championship. In the 2025 season at William Jewell College, Barnett started five games.
