The outfit did not go over well with fans, but ultimately, Sabalenka was unbothered, saying, “Who cares what people think?” to reporters on Friday, Aug. 28. She explained that she went with this outfit as a tribute to playing in New York, and she likes to do a different Grand Slam look for the host country.

“This year it was super special for Nike … it was always related to different sports,” she said.

“Surfing for the Australian Open, ballet for Roland Garros, cricket for Wimbledon. Now it’s basketball, and we’re in New York. Isn’t it the perfect fit?” she continued.

Sabalenka said that it is not unusual for people to complain about different looks, but she said that Nike "went really cool and fun" for this one and is not letting the comments get to her.

“So who cares about people, right? All that matters for me is that I love it. For me, it’s super fun. Plus it’s really cool for pictures.”

When Sabalenka previewed the look on Instagram last month, some fans called the outfit "tacky" and "a terrible design."

Sabalenka will be back on the court for her first round of the women's singles at the US Open to face Camila Osorio on Monday, Aug. 31.
