With the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup fast approaching, and the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon, Mexico gear up for competitive summer action as they host Switzerland in the first of two international friendlies.
Javier Aguirre has a strong roster at his disposal, with nearly everyone fully fit and available for action as El Tri look to defend their Gold Cup crown.
Mexico's title at the most recent competition two years ago was their 12th all-time Gold Cup crown, and fifth of the last eight tournaments. They have at least made the final in seven of the past nine Gold Cup tournaments, finishing second in 2007 and 2021 while being dumped out in the semifinals in 2013 and 2017.
Switzerland, ranked 20th in the world, are preparing for World Cup qualifying to come in the fall, looking to find out who can help replace recently retired veterans Xherdan Shaqiri, Yann Sommer, and Fabian Schar.
Mexico vs. Switzerland starting lineups, team news
Mexico head coach Aguirre has made some ruthless decisions for this Gold Cup, leaving experienced veterans Gerardo Arteaga, Uriel Antuna, and Luis Romo off the roster, as well as Diego Lainez and Erick Sanchez.
Meanwhile, he's called in six uncapped players, led by 16-year-old midfielder Gilberto Mora of Tijuana, who has already become a regular starter for his club at such a young age.
Tigres defender Jesus Angulo was initially called in to the Mexico squad but had to withdraw due to injury.
Mexico starting lineup (4-4-2, right to left): Rangel (GK) — Lara, Montes, Orozco, M. Chavez — Alvarado, C. Rodriguez, Lira, Huerta — Gimenez, Jimenez.

Switzerland are bloated at the midfield position, but not a lot of them are capable out wide in the 4-4-2. Ruben Vargas, who started on the left side of midfield in their last match against Luxembourg, is out with a hamstring injury, so head coach Murat Yakin will need to find a solution.
Champions League finalist Yann Sommer has retired from international duty, so either Gregor Kobel or Yvon Mvogo will start in goal. Fabian Schar and Xherdan Shaqiri have also called time on their international careers.
Central midfield is loaded for Switzerland, with Granit Xhaka, Remo Freuler, and Denis Zakaria all over 50 caps while Djibril Sow and Michel Aebischer also have significant international experience.
Freiburg youngster Johan Manzambi could make his international debut.
Switzerland predicted lineup (4-4-2, right to left): Kobel (GK) — Widmer, Elvedi, Akanji, R. Rodriguez — Rieder, Zakaria, Xhaka, Garcia – Ndoye, Embolo

Mexico vs. Switzerland score prediction
These are two evenly matches teams who are likely to start with strong sides but also hand some opportunities to fringe players. Mexico have the Gold Cup in mind, while Switzerland will want to give chances to a few untested names, so expect a number of changes to the lineups during the game.
With that in mind, a score draw feels probable.
Prediction: Mexico 1-1 Switzerland
