Mets' offseason was MLB's most confusing for nine reasons

The New York Mets did some major renovations with the roster this offseason. They let a lot of players leave, traded others, and added a ton of talent both to the pitching staff and the lineup.

There are plenty of moves the Mets made, and didn't make (Kyle Tucker), that shaped this offseason. But while the roster looks a lot different, the offseason was a very confusing one for the Mets.

Jayson Stark of The Athletic shared the opinion of 36 MLB insiders - ranging from scouts, managers, coaches, and executives - on the best and worst subtractions this offseason. The Mets dominated the lists, both positively and negatively, for a very confusing offseason.

Mets had very confusing offseason amid MLB insider polling

When asking about the "most irreplaceable subtractions of the winter," the Mets had three players make the list. Pete Alonso was second with 10 votes, while Edwin Diaz finished seventh with three votes.

Both losses were tough for the Mets and will be difficult to replace. But the Mets traded for Freddy Peralta, who received four votes and was tied for fifth.

On one hand, the Mets had two of the worst losses this offseason, while they were able to bring in one of the other top irreplaceable players this offseason.

Things only get even stranger. Stark also asked these 36 MLB insiders what the best subtractions of the offseason were. Another angle here is that these players were good players to trade away or cut ties with this offseason.

Stark's poll found nine votes cast for players leaving the Mets this offseason, specifically veterans such as Jeff McNeil, Brandon Nimmo, Ryan Helsley, and even one vote for Alonso.

Letting those players walk, or in the case of McNeil and Nimmo, trading them away, were good moves in the eyes of MLB insiders around baseball.

However, while the Mets received praise for letting those players walk, they also found a way to add players who were positive subtractions around the league.

Marcus Semien was the second-ranked player in the offseason's best subtractions, as the Texas Rangers' moving on from Semien was praised by five MLB insiders.

That's not all, as Luis Robert Jr. (3 votes) and Devin Williams (2 votes) were also named as players who were good subtractions this offseason.

The Mets' offseason was incredibly confusing. They made a ton of roster moves, and made some great additions and additions by subtraction.

But, they also lost two key players in Alonso and Diaz, while adding a few questionable players like Semien, Williams, and Robert Jr.
