The New York Mets were once predicted to be World Series favorites this past season; then they ended up missing the playoffs entirely. Now, they are going to have to make some tough decisions this offseason regarding their roster.
One of those is whether to re-sign Pete Alonso. The Athletic’s Tim Britton projects that Alonso will sign a five-year, $140 million contract this offseason.
“Like his former high school teammate Tucker, Alonso benefits from the massive deal Guerrero signed in the spring. Guerrero’s extension revived a first-base market that had been stagnant for a decade. However, Alonso will be 31 next year, hasn’t delivered the kind of peak, near-MVP performance Guerrero had before his extension, and still sits a rung below the production level of other first basemen who signed big-time contracts. You can make the case that Alonso is the high man in the next tier down rather than the low man in that top tier,” Britton wrote.
This season, Alonso slashed .272/.347/.524/.871 with 41 doubles, 38 home runs, and 126 RBI in 162 games played. His power is almost unmatched, and he’s one of the best RBI producers in the MLB.

Now, the question is simple: Will the Mets pay him? They already have massive contracts for Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor, so will Alonso make the cut as well? Possibly, but there's a good chance he won't.
Hopefully, the Mets can find the money and retain him. However, if they don’t believe they have enough, then they should take what they got and go for pitching, and say thank you and goodbye to Alonso.
