The New York Jets have made several notable changes over the last two days. For starters, they made the very shocking decision to trade Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for a pair of first-round picks and wide receiver AD Mitchell. In addition to that, the Jets traded defensive tackle Quinnen Williams to the Dallas Cowboys, receiving a 2026 second-round pick and a 2027 first-round pick, as well as defensive tackle Mazi Smith, in return.
That wasn't the last defensive change the Jets made, though, as one of their top defenders made known on Wednesday. Linebacker Quincy Williams revealed that he was being benched, and the language he used to describe why can be described as odd at best.
"My coaches told me I was underperforming, that I've been underperforming since training camp," Williams said via Rich Cimini of ESPN.
The Jets' defensive shakeup continues: Former All-Pro LB Quincy Williams has lost his starting job, he told ESPN.
"My coaches told me I was underperforming, that I've been underperforming since training camp," he told me.
Williams said he's "not thrilled" with the decision, but…
Williams further explained the situation as best he could when he was asked if he thought he would be traded.
"I came in Monday and I was the [second-stringer], so i didn't really understand what was going on," Williams said via Connor Hughes. "So I kind of had those thoughts, also. But it was one of those things where I was like, "Dang, I kind of told the Jets I wanted to be a Jet for the long term so."
Williams added that he still wants to be a Jet long term. A bizarre week in East Rutherford gets even more crazy.
