The New York Mets could be changing their mind on a recent trade target.
Earlier this month, Major League Baseball insider Jon Heyman reported that the team had inquired on Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr.
"The Mets have checked in in the past on Luis Robert," Heyman said on a Bleacher Report livestream.
The White Sox are on their way to another last place finish in the American League Central, currently sitting 17.5 games back from first place with a 15-35 record.
Amid their woes, Robert is having a season to forget and will probably not get moved to the Mets or anywhere else if his season continues the way it has gone.
Robert said himself that he doesn’t think a team will take a chance on him. Chicago needed their star player to play well to avoid another season like they had in 2024 when they went just 41-121, the worst record in MLB history over 162 games.
But Heyman added in the livestream that Robert's season has surely updated any Mets plans to target him for a trade.
“I agree with Luis Robert Jr. If he’s hitting .182, he’s not going to be wanted,” Heyman said. “Luis Robert Jr. is not going to be traded if he’s hitting under .200, at least not for anything particularly good. If they trade him, it would just be to unload the contract.”
Robert is making $15 million this season and has $20 million club options for the next two seasons before being an unrestricted free agent in 2028. He signed a $50 million extension with the White Sox in 2020.
In addition to the Mets, the rumored teams to target Robert have been the Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers, per Heyman.
Although he has 17 stolen bases, second in MLB, Robert is slashing an abysmal .178/.270/.294 with only five home runs and 17 RBI in 46 games.
