Seattle Mariners No. 1 prospect and MLB's No. 6 prospect, shortstop Colt Emerson, didn't waste any time making an impression in the major leagues, as he hit a home run in his second game as a big leaguer. Signing a lucrative extension before making his debut (eight years, $95 million), Emerson earned it after hitting .285 with a .842 OPS and 16 home runs at three levels in the Mariners minor league system in 2025.
Starting at Triple-A Tacoma this season, the 20-year-old batted .255 with a .816 OPS and seven home runs in 38 games. Emerson's performance in his first couple of games and overall has helped him gain a couple of spots on ESPN's prospect rankings.
Seattle Mariners shortstop Colt Emerson jumps three places in ESPN's prospect rankings
After playing third base to start, shortstop J.P. Crawford is willing to move to third base so Emerson can become the Mariners' future shortstop. This, along with hitting his first big league home run, has Emerson ranked third on ESPN's prospect ranking, up from sixth on the last ranking.
According to ESPN's Kiley McDaniel, despite not having all the tools, Emerson is still "above-average" at everything.

"Emerson hit a homer in his second big league game and seems to be auditioning to take the every-day shortstop role next season after J.P. Crawford hits free agency," wrote McDaniel. "He may not have a true plus tool, but Emerson is above average at almost everything while still being younger than almost every top collegiate prospect in the 2026 MLB draft."
Emerson has two tools that will help him start his big-league career. Hitting is Emerson's best tool (65/80 grade), while his fielding (60/80 grade) is a close second. At 20, Emerson is still growing into his body and will develop more power as he ages.
