The Los Angeles Lakers are now waiting for free agency to arrive, as they are expected to have a major offseason. One of the biggest questions is whether or not LeBron James will return.
James is also considering retirement, which is expected given that he is 41 years old. However, his final decision is expected to come after a conversation with his family.
“With my future, I don't know," James said after Game 4. "Obviously still fresh from losing. I don't know. I don't know what the future holds for me, obviously. As it stands right now tonight, I've got a lot of time. I'll sit back like I think I said last year after we lost to Minnesota, I'll go back and recalibrate with my family and talk with them and spend some time with them. When the time comes, obviously, you guys will know what I decide to do."
If James returns, it will also come down to where, as he is set to become a free agent. Wherever he goes, it is widely believed that taking a pay cut would be in his best interest.
“There is definitely, I think, a prevailing sentiment around the league that LeBron, wherever he goes, would be best served to take a minimum salary contract if he does care ultimately about winning another championship,” Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer said.
In a recent appearance on the Rich Eisen Show, ESPN insider Shams Charania revealed that there is strong belief James will play another season. He also noted that Los Angeles is likely the preferred destination.
“All the indications I've gotten over the course of the year is that he's gonna play one more season," Charania said. "The where? The how much of it all? That's all obviously going to be a factor. Is it going to be LA? That's gotta probably be his preference. ... The Lakers have made clear they want him back."
James must have strong belief that the Los Angeles Lakers will make the right moves this offseason. He could also simply prefer to remain in California, where he has become accustomed to living.
Year 24 could very well be the last, but it is expected to take place in Los Angeles. Hopefully, James, Luka Dončić, and Austin Reaves can give the NBA world a fully healthy playoff run at least once together.
