The LA Lakers and Memphis Grizzlies tipped off their NBA Cup campaigns at the FedEx Forum on Friday. Both teams entered the contest with identical records, each having won three of their five games. The Purple and Gold got some key bodies back, with both Luka Doncic and Marcus Smart returning to action after missing multiple games.
Doncic and Smart started the game, with Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura and Deandre Ayton rounding off the starting lineup. The Grizzlies' starting lineup comprised Ja Morant, Jaylen Well, Jaren Jackson Jr., Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Jock Landale.
Luka Doncic enjoyed a hot start in his comeback game and scored seven quick points. Jake LaRavia picked up from where he left off in the previous game and knocked down two consecutive shots to get the Lakers within a point at 17-16.

The Grizzlies led their defence, dictating the offence as they ran in transition to put points on the board early. Jaren Jackson Jr. made all of his first three attempts, while Ja Morant made two shots to keep Memphis' offense flowing.
Meanwhile, Doncic’s offensive aggression fueled the Lakers to a 31-27 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Slovenian superstar tallied 13 points in the opening period.
