The New York Knicks made a flurry of moves right before training camp began to create competition for their final two roster spots. They signed several veterans who could make an impact if they stick around, but it remains to be seen who will make the team.

This is a smart approach as head coach Mike Brown looks to establish a competitive culture. One of the players signed was Bruce Brown.

“Earlier this week, the Knicks agreed to Exhibit 9 deals with five players: Ochai Agbaji, Bruce Brown, John Konchar, Drew Eubanks, and James Wiseman. The Knicks only have two roster spots open and are approaching the second apron, so there's more at stake than just performance and fit during the preseason for this group," SI's Max Wildstein wrote.

It was surprising to see Brown accept a training camp deal, but he is joining the defending NBA champions. Recently, Brown shared that the second apron has made it difficult for players like him to find opportunities around the league.

“Bruce Brown, among the newest crop of Knicks signings, went from logging 82 games last season with a title contender to a scant free agent market. The teams interested "weren't many," he told The Post, and the common excuse was "the second apron." New York Post's Stefan Bondy wrote.

On Thursday, Brown made some frustrating comments about the new collective bargaining agreement (CBA), explaining that players in his position do not have many opportunities.

“I'm sure there is. The new CBA is good for max guys, new free agents and rookie extension guys. The middle guys, it kind of sucks for us. There's not a lot of people getting that full mid-level,” Brown said.

Potentially, something will work out for Brown, as he is simply looking for a fair opportunity to play. However, it has become more difficult for some teams to pay players like him under the current CBA. That leaves veterans in the middle tier of the market facing circumstances largely outside their control.

Brown will likely continue speaking up for players who are struggling to find the opportunities they want. For now, it is an issue that deserves further attention.
