Among the many reasons why the Toronto Blue Jays were among the most disappointing teams in Major League Baseball last season, superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was at the top of that list.
To put it as nicely as possible, 2026 was as bad a season as anyone could have imagined for Guerrero, who has been one of the better players in Major League Baseball throughout his eight-year career.
It's interesting that Guerrero played at this level, as it almost felt like something was wrong for much of the season. His inability to get anything going in the power department was very concerning, especially with his massive 14-year, $500 million contract.
Guerrero finished with just nine home runs, by far the fewest in any full season that he's played. For Toronto, while it has other offseason needs to consider, Guerrero getting back to his former self is the biggest question the organization has to be realistic about.
“Privately, the Blue Jays need to be very honest with themselves. Do they truly believe that Guerrero will bounce back to hit 30-plus home runs with an .875 OPS next season, or is there concern? That will shape their offseason and how they build the lineup around Guerrero, because the 2026 version of this lineup was the worst in baseball,” Keegan Matheson wrote.
It's tough not to trust a guy like Guerrero after one bad season, but when anyone signs a 14-year, $500 million deal, there are always going to be some worries.
