Klint Kubiak head coach rumor is good news for Raiders and Seahawks, bad news for Cardinals

1 hour ago 2

As we head into the weekend, all eyes are on Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak and the Las Vegas Raiders and Arizona Cardinals.

That's because both the Raiders and Cardinals have yet to fill their head-coach vacancies and Kubiak appears to be the top choice for both squads.

Reports indicate the Raiders and Cardinals will both interview Kubiak for a second time over the weekend before he heads into Super Bowl week.

The latest head coach rumor on Kubiak comes from ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, who is hearing that Kubiak prefers the Raiders job over the Cardinals gig.

However, Fowler adds that there is no guarantee Kubiak will land with either team and it's still very possible the Seahawks play-caller decides to stay in Seattle for another season.

“My sense in league circles talking to people is that he would prefer the Raiders job over the Cardinals if he does go that route,” Fowler said. “It is not a slam dunk he leaves Seattle.”

“He’s been with multiple teams. He’s been with multiple teams over the years. Just moved his family to the Northwest," Fowler added. "So it would take the right kind of situation for him to leave. But it is believed that the target for Las Vegas and that No. 1 pick with Fernando Mendoza, would be Kubiak.”

This report differs a bit from the one ESPN's Adam Schefter provided on Friday, when he said on the "Pat McAfee Show" that Kubiak was "definitely getting" the Raiders or Cardinals jobs, which suggests he won't be back in Seattle.

“He’s definitely getting one of those jobs," Schefter said.

It's easy to see why Kubiak would prefer the Raiders over the Cardinals.

After all, Las Vegas is set to land Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick and the team is loaded with cap space and has a few attractive building blocks on offense in Brock Bowers and Ashton Jeanty.

The Cardinals no doubt have some attractive pieces on offense as well, but they do not have a sure situation at quarterback and they have about $50 million less to work with in cap space.

Even if Kubiak does take one of those two jobs, his hiring can't be made official until after the Super Bowl, per NFL rules.

But we could get an indication about where Kubiak is headed before then if one of the two teams goes on to hire someone not named Kubiak in the week ahead.
