Paramount’s highly anticipated animated film, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, is officially set to premiere in Fall 2026. On December 23, 2025, the studio announced that the movie would bypass theaters and instead debut exclusively on the Paramount+ streaming service.

This new chapter takes place several years after the original series, featuring the "Gaang" as young adults on a global quest to protect an ancient power and preserve their culture. Ke Huy Quan, Taika Waititi, Freida Pinto, and Geraldine Viswanathan, among others have joined the voice cast of The Legend of Aang.

In The Legend of Aang, Steven Yeun will voice Zuko, while original voice actor Dee Bradley Baker returns to the franchise. This movie is the first of several planned projects from Avatar Studios, which is also developing a new sequel series titled Avatar: Seven Havens.

The film is a direct sequel to the original television series that aired on Nickelodeon. While the first show followed Aang as a young boy trying to master the elements, this new film jumps ahead in time. It features the same main characters: Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, and Zuko, but shows them as young adults.

The story follows them on a brand-new adventure as they travel the world to protect an ancient power. The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender acts as a bridge, filling in the gap between the original series and the later sequel series, The Legend of Korra.

The movie will be available to stream exclusively on Paramount+ starting in the Fall of 2026. Although it was originally planned to play in movie theaters, the studio decided in late 2025 to move the release directly to their streaming service. This makes Paramount+ the main home for the franchise, where fans can also watch all the old episodes of the original show and The Legend of Korra.

The project's journey began in February 2021 when a new division called Avatar Studios was formed. This studio was created specifically to make new movies and shows set in the Avatar world. The series original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko were put in charge.

After they left a different live-action project at Netflix due to creative differences, they returned to Nickelodeon to oversee these new animated projects. Then, the development of The Legend of Aang truly picked up in 2022 when it was confirmed that the first movie would focus on the original "Gaang" as adults.

The film's animation is being handled by Flying Bark Productions. Over the years, the film's release date has changed several times due to the time needed for animation. It was first set for 2025, then January 2026, before finally landing on its current Fall 2026 window.
