What our Post expert thinks about NBA MVP
The narrative through the first quarter of this NBA season was heavy on the Oklahoma City Thunder love. Rightfully so. The Thunder started the season 24-1 and a strong case could have been made that nearly every award could go to a player or coach on the team, including Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for Most Valuable Player.
But there’s a reason they don’t give out quarter season awards. As good as the Thunder and Gilgeous-Alexander have been, Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets have been right on their heels.
The three-time MVP is somehow putting up even better numbers this season than he did in any of his previous MVP-winning years. Jokic has career highs in points (29.9) and assists (11.1), leads the league in rebounding (12.4) and is shooting 44 percent from beyond the arc. His 16.51 Box Plus-Minus, basketball references all-in-one metric for player performance, is nearly three points higher than his previous high, which was already the best ever recorded in the NBA.
It makes sense then, that Jokic is now the favorite to win MVP on Kalshi’s prediction platform, garnering a 51 percent chance to take home the hardware to SGA’s 43 percent.
