The week two Thursday Night Football matchup of the 2026 season has everything the NFL could have wanted.
Josh Allen is coming off a 334-yard performance in Buffalo’s thrilling 36-31 win over Houston. Jahmyr Gibbs just carried Detroit to an overtime escape against New Orleans with 156 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Both teams are 1-0. Both offenses showed they can score under pressure. The concern for Detroit is whether its depleted offensive line can keep this heavyweight matchup competitive.
Starting left guard Christian Mahogany and right tackle Blake Miller have been ruled out, leaving the Lions without two starters against a Buffalo defense that made enough critical plays to survive C.J. Stroud and the Texans. Detroit needed overtime to beat New Orleans 31-30 despite Gibbs rushing 29 times and Amon-Ra St. Brown catching two touchdown passes. The Lions controlled possession for nearly 37 minutes, but their defense surrendered 469 total yards.
That is a dangerous number with Allen waiting.

Bills have their own challenge against Gibbs
Buffalo allowed Houston to possess the ball for more than 36 minutes in Week 1. The Bills also surrendered 381 yards, although their offense responded with 409. Allen completed 20 of 29 passes for 334 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. Dalton Kincaid produced 130 receiving yards, giving Detroit another major problem in the middle of the field.
The Lions’ best defense could be Gibbs and a rushing attack that generated 165 yards against New Orleans. Long drives would keep Allen on the sideline and protect a defense that struggled with Tyler Shough and Chris Olave. Detroit’s offensive-line injuries make that plan more difficult. Larry Borom is expected to replace Miller, while Ben Bartch is in line to start for Mahogany, according to Pride of Detroit.
The game also will serve as Buffalo’s home opener at the new Highmark Stadium. Few opponents could provide a more dramatic first prime-time test.
