John Elway is the biggest name in the history of the Denver Broncos. Those who saw him play will put him up against anyone. But his career ended following the 1998 season, and there have been some incredible quarterbacks in that time.
One of those is Aaron Rodgers, the current starting quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers, who recently announced that the 2026 season will be his last. With Rodgers' name in the news, those in the sports media world have been talking about him and on Thursday, an interesting and heated debate took place between Michael Wilbon and Stephen A. Smith on ESPN's First Take.
Smith stated that Rodgers' physical talent was the best the league has ever seen, and Wilbon wasn't having it, immediately referencing Elway.
"He was never physically the greatest quarterback, I'm sorry. I know you're younger than me 10 years, Stephen A, I know you're old enough to remember John Elway, I know you are. Aaron Rodgers in no way measured up physically to the talent John Elway had. Never, in his wildest dreams, did he measure up physically to John Elway. You need to go get YouTube or Google or something, not close to John Elway, who, Stephen A, went to five Super Bowls, three of which he had no All-Pro teammates, stop it", said Wilbon.
Smith repeatedly interrupts Wilbon, calling his take ridiculous and repeatedly saying that he was just comparing physical talent, not career resumes. So, which quarterback would the majority of NFL fans rather have?
John Elway or Aaron Rodgers?
It's a fun debate, though similar to the age-old debate over Michael Jordan and LeBron James, you're comparing two totally different eras and thus, two totally different games. Those who favor stats are going to side with Rodgers, as he has more passing yards and passing touchdowns by a considerable amount. But those who would rather have a proven winner will pick Elway, who has two Super Bowls in five trips, to Rodgers' one in his only appearance in the big game.
However, if we are only discussing physical talent, it's an interesting debate.
At their absolute best, both of these players could do it all. Rodgers was one of the more accurate passers in league history, able to make throws almost no one has ever been able to make. He was as good at throwing the ball on the run as anyone who has ever played and he could make you pay with his feet as well.
But who does that make you think of? That's right, Elway.
When Elway was at his best, he was able to do things that most didn't even think possible. He had an absolute cannon for an arm, easily one of the strongest the league has ever seen. He was mobile, incredibly difficult to sack due to his escapability and he could make throws across his body that coaches teach you not to even attempt.
There is a reason that Elway is the highest-graded quarterback ever by ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper, Jr.
It's a fun discussion and if that discussion takes place anywhere near Broncos Country, it's a one-sided argument. However, looking at comments on X, it's a mixed bag.
You Youngins obviously never saw Elway play. John Elway had a Rocket Arm & yes it was stronger than Rodgers. Also John Elway was a better athlete. Elway could run & was drafted by the New York Yankees when he was a 2 sport Star at Stanford
— Its A DubNation World (@DaBay4LF) May 21, 2026Aaron Rodgers has the greatest arm of all-time, imo. Brady and Manning agree. It’s almost bionic, elastic. He can flick his arm and sling it 50 yards. His accuracy, throwing into tight windows is insane. I’ve never heard somebody try to argue that Rodgers was less talented.
— Robbie (@robdogeraser) May 21, 2026He didn't, John Elway has arguably the strongest arm in the history of the league, and he was very fast for a QB used his legs more often that most QB's in those days. There isn't a Football fan on Earth who's seen both Elway and Rogers play and would pick Aaron over John.
— Rick Hunter (@RicHuntter) May 21, 2026Lots of Elway love and I get it, but Rodgers has a more precise arm in my opinion and is a better processor of the game. I'd probably take Elway in a big game though, dude had guts...
