Jets remain in QB doubt after free agency

The New York Jets and the quarterback position. Name two more problematic things an NFL franchise has?

With Justin Fields seen as a dart throw last season, that didn't work, and now the Jets have pivoted to veteran Geno Smith.

The move gives New York a veteran head at a crucial position, but after a 2-13 season with the Las Vegas Raiders, Geno isn't exactly in the good graces of fans right now.

But he gives New York a higher ceiling (not by much) than Fields did.

And for PFF, the website has given the move for Geno a lukewarm response, with an "average" grade.

"The Jets make their move at quarterback, bringing Geno Smith home after four seasons with the team from 2013 to 2016," PFF wrote. "Smith had a rough year in 2025, posting a 4.1% turnover-worthy play rate that was significantly higher than his 3.0% big-time throw rate. But his four seasons with the Seahawks from 2021 to 2024 would be an upgrade for New York compared with what it had in 2025."

Can Geno rediscover form?

That will be what Aaron Glenn is hoping happens.

With Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson, Geno at least has two top weapons at his disposal, and the hope is that he can mesh with the offense better than he did in Las Vegas.

No, Geno isn't the "fix" for New York, but a placeholder until the draft next season, where it is widely expected the Jets will be in play for a top quarterback.

So, this is a one-year rental for the Jets and Smith. Let's see how it goes.

In truth, it couldn't be any worse than last year, could it?
