Odd timeline gives Eagles better chance to keep Dallas Goedert

The Philadelphia Eagles entered the offseason with all three of their tight ends set to hit free agency.

The outcomes of Dallas Goedert, Grant Calcaterra and Kylen Granson were all in doubt.

They've already brought Calcaterra back, and they've signed Johnny Mundt.

But the most intriguing news came Wednesday night about Goedert.

The Athletic's Zach Berman posted this on X:

"Dallas Goedert was not listed as a free agent by the league. His void date has been pushed back to Friday, a league source told @TheAthletic. This procedural move would give both sides a chance to work out a contract extension."

The delay, and increased time in negotiations, helps the Eagles avoid a dead cap hit.

Now, this really incentivizes the Eagles and Goedert to get a deal done.

Philly doesn't want a dead money hit on the cap.

And now that Goedert is delayed in getting to the open market, he likely wouldn't get as good a payday elsewhere as other teams have already given a lot of their money away.

This likely was the plan all along to allow for this altered timeline to happen, where almost every other player done with their contract became a free agent officially on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET.

Look for the Eagles to have some kind of announcement on Goedert coming soon. It's really the only logical conclusion.
