Shedeur Sanders could finally get the opportunity to prove himself when the Cleveland Browns return to action in Week 10. The rookie, who is now the backup quarterback, has yet to make an appearance for the team after starting the season as a third-string option.

Tony Grossi raised the possibility of Sanders claiming the starting role in his appearance on “The Tony Rizzo Show” on Monday. Dillon Gabriel has struggled to impress since replacing Joe Flacco as the starter for the Browns, raising the possibility of another change in the position.

In the conversation between Grossi and Rizzo on the show, the Browns insider made it known that Shedeur Sanders will be having a shot at the starting role for the first time. This is despite the Browns' coach, Kevin Stefanski, shutting down the possibility of a quarterback change.

Grossi: I think so, but I'm not sure. Rizzo: Whoa! Whoa! Why are you not sure? Grossi: Well, because regardless of what Kevin has said repeatedly, it depends on what the committee decides, and we'll find out the result today. Rizzo: You're saying there is a chance that Andrew Berry and whoever, Paul DePodesta, Jimmy Haslam, could tell Kevin Stefanski if we're starting to Shedeur. Grossi: It's possible. I wouldn't rule it out until I hear today. I think it's going to be no change. Rizzo: Tony, be still my heart. Grossi: I don't want to lead everyone to think that this is going to happen, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happens.

Mike Florio shuts down the possibility of Shedeur Sanders claiming the starting job

Before Tony Grossi brought up the possibility of Shedeur Sanders earning the starting role, Mike Florio had shut down the likelihood. In his report last Monday, he examined the Browns’ current roster, highlighting its significant deficiencies, which will stop it from winning games, irrespective of the quarterback.

“Four games likely aren’t enough to make any decisions regarding whether Gabriel can develop into the long-term starter,” Florio wrote. “Still, at 2-6, the Browns are likely not competing for a playoff spot in the ultra-competitive AFC. At some point, it will make sense to see what Sanders can do. “Gabriel has shown flashes of potential, and the failure to win games is far from being his fault. The Browns simply aren’t good enough, across the board (with the exception of Myles Garrett and maybe one or two others).”

While Kevin Stefanski ruled out the possibility of a change at the quarterback position following the loss to the New England Patriots, the call to hand Shedeur Sanders a chance has further intensified. The Browns return to action this week, and they will be on the road to play the New York Jets.
