"It’s not too clever to say outside" - Former Manchester United star believes comments made by Amorim put 'extra pressure' on players

Former Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen is critical of manager Ruben Amorim's comments about his side's quality following a horrendous run of two wins in 10 Premier League games.

Between December 2024 and February this year, the Red Devils lost six league defeats and won just twice (Southampton-home and Fulham away), prompting Amorim to tear into his side:

"In (the past) 10 games in Premier League, we won two," said Amorim (as per GOAL). "Imagine what this is for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is for me. We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. "I have full knowledge of that. We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United. I know you (media) want headlines, but I am saying that because we have to acknowledge that, and to change that, here you go: your headlines."

However, the comments didn't sit well with Eriksen, who joined VfL Wolfsburg this summer:

"That didn’t help. Yeah, that didn’t help at all. I mean, that was not… I don’t think that helped the players at all. Some stuff you can say inside, and it’s not too clever to say outside, to put extra pressure and put an extra label on the players who were already trying to do their best. "I don’t think that helped at all, no. Then if he’s right or wrong, whatever, but I think for us it was a bit of like, ‘Oh, here we go again. Another headline'."

A fourth defeat in five home league games left the Red Devils 13th in the standings. They would go on to finish the season in 15th, their worst league finish in five decades.

Manchester United have fared much better this season after their forgettable 2024-25 campaign. Following a hard-fought 1-0 home win over Newcastle United at the weekend, the Red Devils are sixth in the standings.

Ruben Amorim's side - traling leaders Arsenal (42) by 13 points after 18 games - next prepare to welcome Wolverhampton Wanderers to Old Trafford on Tuesday (December 30) to end the year.

United beat Wolves 4-1 at the Molineux in their most recent meeting this month but lost this fixture 1-0 at home (in April) last season. However, they will fancy their chances this time, having beaten Wolverhampton eight times in their last 11 league meetings, losing three.
