Over the weekend, the NBA offseason got underway in big fashion with a sizable trade. As the basketball world continues to break down both sides, one insider used this as an opportunity to shine a light on the Boston Celtics.
After emerging as a key member of the roster in recent years, the Memphis Grizzlies decided to part ways with guard Desmond Bane. He is now heading to the Orlando Magic to join forces with Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner. In return, the Grizzlies received Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, four first-round picks, and a pick swap.
Seeing that Bane is a non-All-Star, many believe that the Magic overpaid to land the Grizzlies guard. However, with his complementary skill set, some feel it was a smart move for Orlando.
In the midst of the discourse, NBA insider Kevin O'Connor posed a stern question regarding the Celtics. He speculated if this sizable return would be enough for Boston to part ways with standout guard Derrick White.
Celtics fans: Desmond Bane got traded for two solid rotation players, four firsts, and one swap.
Would you take an equal deal for Derrick White?
White is of a similar tier of player as Bane as a high-level role player/fringe All-Star. They are also plug-and-play talents that can fit on just about every roster in the league. White is coming off a season with the Celtics where he averaged 16.4 PPG, 4.5 RPG, and 4.8 APG.
While White has become a vital part of the Celtics' core, an offer of this magnitude is certainly enough to land him. Boston would be foolish to decline it, as it could help them on various fronts. For starters, adding rotation-level players makes them deeper and will help them survive with Jayson Tatum. Also, all that draft capital could help Brad Stevens reshape the roster around Tatum and Jaylen Brown to get the Celtics back in the title hunt.
Boston shouldn't be in any rush to trade White, but if a Godfather offer like this came about, it'd be worth strongly considering.
