Insider reveals what it would take to sign Ryan O'Hearn in free agency

Ryan O'Hearn started his season with the Baltimore Orioles. But with their abysmal start, they decided to let some players go at the trade deadline.

O'Hearn was traded to the San Diego Padres alongside Ramon Laureano in exchange for Boston Bateman, Tyson Neighbors, Tanner Smith, Brandon Butterworth, Cobb Hightower, and Victor Figueroa.

O'Hearn did well with the Padres, holding down first base and hitting .276/.350/.387 with four home runs and 20 runs batted in over the course of 50 games. Now, the slugger hits the open market.

Insider reveals what it would take to sign Ryan O'Hearn in free agency

Ryan O'Hearn joins a loaded first base class on the open market. The headliners will be Pete Alonso and Josh Naylor, but O'Hearn is not far behind.

He should get a ton of attention this winter. ESPN's Kiley McDaniel sees him settling on a two-year, $27 million deal, which could entice teams that are not looking to commit too hard this winter.

"He doesn't have massive raw power, so he's more of a steady on-base threat with some power that's largely limited to first base and on the wrong side of 30 years old now. That boxed O'Hearn into a one- or two-year deal for a little over $10 million per year."

The one knock on O'Hearn is that he is more of an on-base threat than someone who is looking to hit a home run each time he steps to the plate.

The Chicago Cubs could be a team to watch out for here. They could make O'Hearn their starting first baseman while moving Michael Busch to the DH spot.
