Florian Wirtz claimed he knew he would ‘score one day’ after finally bagging his first Liverpool goal in Saturday’s 2-1 Premier League win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The German midfielder broke his duck just 89 seconds after Ryan Gravenberch scored the opener for the Reds. It was Wirtz’s first strike in 23 games across competitions, and the goal ultimately proved to be Liverpool’s winner against a rock-bottom Wolves.
Speaking after the game, Wirtz expressed excitement after finally finding the back of the net for Liverpool. He told Sky Sports:
“It was very nice the feeling on the pitch with the fans around. I was very happy and I still am. I was confident that I would score one day. I wanted to start earlier scoring and assisting but it was like this and I have to accept it. I just know that it will come, and I try to keep going like that. “We played a brilliant first half. We lost the game and got it back. Everyone was working hard. In the last 20 minutes, we made it a bit difficult. I cannot explain why. We have to change that. That's how we want to do it. We want to be there and be on top of the table. It's not been an easy start for us but we're doing better and getting the points.”The 22-year-old endured an underwhelming start to life at Liverpool after his big-money move to the club in the summer. He will hope this strike is the first of many, with the Reds next in action against Leeds United on Thursday, January 1.
Arne Slot backs Florian Wirtz to score ‘many more goals’ after first Liverpool strike
Liverpool boss Arne Slot believes the floodgates of goals will now open for Florian Wirtz ahead of the upcoming fixtures after the midfielder scored his first goal for the club. He also hailed the former Bayer Leverkusen man’s performance against Wolves, insisting he did far more than just score.
Slot told Sky Sports:
“The team has seen how much he's done for us already, creating chances, so close to a goal. For him to score his first goal is nice but it's only a start. With his quality, he knows best, he will go on to score many more goals for us. But again, the focus is on the result. Florian did more than only score a goal today, he was involved in many moments where we created chances.”In addition to scoring his first goal for Liverpool, Wirtz also produced a stellar display against Wolves, particularly in the first half. He won more duels (7), completed more take-ons (5), and had more touches in the opposition box in the opening 45 minutes than any other player.
