How to ride nautilus in Minecraft

With the Mounts of Mayhem game drop, Minecraft’s oceans have finally received a much-needed upgrade in the form of a new aquatic mount called the nautilus. It has been a long time since Mojang gave players a fresh reason to explore the game’s vast ocean biomes, and this new mob does exactly that.

While the name nautilus may sound familiar to longtime players thanks to nautilus shells being added in 2018’s Update Aquatic, this is the first time the creature itself has appeared in the game. More importantly, it is also Minecraft’s first mount that can be ridden underwater.

Since this is a brand-new type of mount, you may be wondering how riding a nautilus actually works in Minecraft. This guide breaks down everything you need to know, from finding and taming one to riding it across the oceans.

How to find and tame nautilus in Minecraft

Before you think about riding a nautilus in Minecraft, you need to find one. You can find the nautilus in all types of ocean biomes. This new mob is not quite rare, as oceans are among the most common biomes in Minecraft. However, nautilus can spawn in a few different variants:

• Regular nautilus
• Zombie nautilus
• Zombie coral nautilus

Sometimes, nautilus can spawn as a zombified mob paired with a drowned. If you can kill the drowned mob, the zombie nautilus becomes free to tame. Lastly, zombie nautiluses spawning in warm ocean biomes will turn into zombie coral nautiluses.

Once you have found a free nautilus roaming around in the ocean, all you have to do is approach it and feed it a bunch of pufferfish. After eating a few pufferfish, you will notice red hearts appearing over the nautilus, meaning you have successfully tamed it.

How to ride nautilus in Minecraft

Once you have tamed a nautilus, you can simply right-click it to ride the mob like any other mount in Minecraft. However, to control the nautilus’ movement and actions, you will need to equip it with a saddle. Right-click on the nautilus with a saddle to equip it. After equipping it, you will be able to ride your nautilus in Minecraft and use its special dash to sprint through oceans and rivers.

That is all you have to do to ride a nautilus in Minecraft. Before you rush to explore the ocean with your new friend, it is recommended to find nautilus armor. You can find all types of nautilus armor in buried treasures, shipwrecks, and ocean ruins. If you manage to find diamond nautilus armor, you can upgrade it to the netherite tier and provide the best protection for your aquatic mount.
