The Cleveland Cavaliers entered the Eastern Conference Finals with one of the league’s deepest rosters and a defense built for postseason success. One game into the series, however, they have a much larger problem: finding an answer for New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson. Brunson once again proved why he has become one of the NBA’s most dangerous playoff performers, leading New York’s comeback victory with 38 points after the Knicks erased a 22-point deficit in Game 1.
The fourth quarter especially exposed Cleveland’s biggest issue. Brunson scored 15 points during New York’s late surge and repeatedly found favorable matchups. The Cavaliers struggled to contain him in isolation situations and frequently allowed him to attack defenders in space.
Stopping Brunson begins with eliminating those switches. Throughout Game 1, Cleveland allowed New York to dictate matchups, and Brunson exploited smaller or slower defenders. The Cavaliers have the personnel to counter that strategy. Evan Mobley must become more active in hedge-and-recover situations, while perimeter defenders such as Donovan Mitchell and wing defenders need to apply more pressure before Brunson gets downhill.
Cavaliers must disrupt Brunson rhythm to shift Eastern Conference Finals
Physicality could also become essential. Brunson thrives on rhythm and comfort, using hesitation dribbles and footwork to create separation. Cleveland cannot allow him to operate freely at the top of the floor. Trapping him periodically, forcing the ball out of his hands and making New York’s supporting cast create offense could shift the series dynamic.
The challenge, of course, is balance. Overcommitting to Brunson creates opportunities for New York shooters and secondary scorers. Yet Game 1 made one reality clear: allowing Brunson to control pace is even more dangerous.
Championship runs often come down to solving one matchup. For Cleveland, the path back into this series starts with slowing Brunson. If they cannot disrupt his rhythm, the Knicks star may continue dictating the entire series.
