How Rams are in win-win situation with Matthew Stafford's future

1 hour ago 3

The Los Angeles Rams are likely still figuring out the plan of attack for the offseason after narrowly missing out on a Super Bowl appearance.

But the NFL moves fast, and free agency is under two months away, and that means several roster decisions have to be made with an eye towards next season.

Just who does head coach Sean McVay want to keep and who he doesn't will be an interesting storyline to follow. But so will the future of Matthew Stafford, who, at soon-to-be 38 years old, is coming off one of his best-ever seasons.

For ESPN, figuring out Stafford's future is a top priority for the Rams, and the franchise is in a win-win situation.

"Figure out if Matthew Stafford will be their quarterback in 2026," ESPN wrote. "This will likely happen very early in the offseason, as it did when the sides agreed to a restructured deal last February. But if Stafford retires after his 17th season, the Rams have the draft capital and/or cap space to find his replacement."

How are Rams in win-win situation with Stafford?

Well, putting it simply, if Stafford does decide to return in 2026, the Rams will again have one of the best quarterbacks in football spearheading their Super Bowl charge.

But if he does decide to retire, as ESPN points out, the Rams have both the cap space and draft capital to go and get another franchise star.

So, win-win.

With Jimmy Garoppolo and Stetson Bennett, the other quarterbacks, the Rams could have a bridge quarterback for 2026 before going all-in the following season.

But either way, whatever Stafford chooses to do, the Rams are in a great position.
