Universal‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Pictures’ Wicked: For Good is the second chapter of the studio’s two-part adaptation of the long-running stage musical Wicked. The chapter, directed by Jon M. Chu and written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox, brings the audience back to Oz to finish the story right from the first film of 2024.

The film elaborates the story of Elphaba and Glinda, showing how the two characters become very different as the political tensions escalate throughout the land.

Wicked: For Good had its debut in São Paulo on November 4, 2025, followed by multiple international previews, and finally, it was released in the U.S. on November 21.

Also, the release of the film is of a wide-format nature, and it is available in RealD 3D, IMAX, Dolby Cinema, 4DX, ScreenX, and D-Box. In addition to the early-access showings for Amazon Prime subscribers, there was also a special double-feature event that was the perfect pairing of both films. The official duration of Wicked: For Good is 137 minutes.

What is the duration of Wicked: For Good?

The 137-minute length is also directly related to the way the movie was made. Director Jon M. Chu and producers Marc Platt and David Stone organized Wicked: For Good in such a way that the second part of the story would have enough time on a screen to bring in the character developments, songs, and the changes in the storyline that could not be accommodated in a single film.

The filming of both Wicked movies started in the UK in December 2022, and it was planned as one continuous shoot. The production stopped in July 2023 due to the SAG-AFTRA strike and got a green light to continue in January 2024, although it had not yet been completed.

Since the two parts were shot consecutively, the team behind the scenes was able to keep the continuity in the sets, choreography, costumes, and style of acting between the two movies.

Director of Photography Alice Brooks and film editor Myron Kerstein collaborated on both movies to ensure consistency, and the length of the film Wicked: For Good made it possible to insert several large-scale scenes, e.g. the tornado caused by Madame Morrible, the rescue of the Animals from Emerald City, and the last events at Kiamo Ko.

Wicked: For Good is a continuation of the story that takes place five years after the events of the first film. Elphaba, who is now the Wicked Witch of the West, as she is most of the time, lives in hiding, but she still tries to protect the Animals who are persecuted under the Wizard’s rule.

On the other hand, Glinda is working as the Wizard’s spokesperson and engaged to Fiyero, who is now the Captain of the Guard.

The plot unfolds with Elphaba becoming more and more dissatisfied with the Wizard’s leadership, and her first stop is Munchkinland, where she tries to help her sister Nessarose. Boq gets involved in a series of events that lead to his being turned into the Tin Man.

Elphaba is on her way back to Emerald City, but after finding the Animals locked up in the Wizard’s chambers, she rejects the offer of a partnership made by him and during the wedding of Glinda and Fiyero, she escapes. Fiyero decides to help her run away, thus starting a chain of events that will alter their relationships.

With the rise of tensions, Morrible creates a tornado that transports Dorothy Gale’s house to Oz, thereby killing Nessarose. Glinda hands over the trademark shoes to Dorothy and without realizing it, she is setting the stage for the meeting, which will be the defining moment of Elphaba’s legacy.

At Kiamo Ko, in an attempt to save Fiyero, Elphaba turns him into the Scarecrow and then gets ready for the mob that is on its way to the castle. The emotional climax of Wicked: For Good is the scene where Glinda and Elphaba meet again, realize how they have affected each other’s lives, and say goodbye to each other as Elphaba fakes her death to be able to vanish from Oz forever.

The cast of Wicked: For Good features Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, with Jonathan Bailey returning to play Fiyero. Jeff Goldblum is back as the Wizard, along with Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, and Ethan Slater as Boq.
