Daron Payne has been one of the more anonymous players in the NFL despite being a one-time Pro Bowler. But on Sunday, he catapulted himself into notoriety.
During the second quarter of the Washington Commanders' 44-22 loss against the Detroit Lions, the defensive tackle threw a right hand at wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown after a rushing touchdown by Jahmyr Gibbs. It led to his ejection:

His actions were condemned by former Washington quarterback Robert Griffin, who wrote on social media:

Teammate and fellow defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw, meanwhile, claimed that Payne had only retaliated after St.Brown hit him first. He also called the ejection "some BS".
