Has Madison Keys won a Grand Slam? American reaches rare tennis major final after Iga Swiatek upset in Australian Open

Madison Keys will take on Aryna Sabalenka in the 2025 Australian Open women's single's finals on Saturday, Jan. 25. Keys advanced to the finals with an incredible upset win against second-seeded Iga Swiatek. Her reward? A match with the No. 1 women's tennis player in the world. 

Keys had a big lead in the third set against Swiatek, but watched it dwindle away. While Swiatek is known for her dominance on clay courts at the French Open, she remains one of the best overall tennis players in the world. She was up six games to five in the third set of the semifinal matchup against Keys and was serving with deuce. 

Swiatek lost the point to force ad out. She then had a rare double fault, which took the match to a decisive 10-point tiebreaker. It seemed like even with the momentum this would be the end for Keys as Swiatek typically locks in. Keys trailed 8-7, but served back-to-back aces and then closed out the set 10-8. Keys is going to her first ever Australian Open Finals.

Has Madison Keys won a Grand Slam?

Keys has yet to win a tennis major in her career. The 29-year-old is competing in her 11th Australian Open in her career after being absent from the Grand Slam last year. This is already her best finish in her career, as Keys had made the semifinals only twice previously and lost both matches. 

Keys has played in 49 singles Grand Slams in her career. She has only been to the finals once and it was the 2017 U.S. Open. Keys took on fellow American Sloane Stephens. Keys was the heavy favorite since she was the No. 15 seed in the tournament and Stephens was unseeded. Stephens had just beaten Venus Williams in the semifinals, and used that momentum to win in straight sets over Keys.

How old is Madison Keys?

Keys was born on February 17, 1995 in Rock Island, Illinois. She will be 30 years old next month. Keys married her long-time coach Bjorn Fratangelo in November and is enjoying her best performance at a Grand Slam in seven years.
