The Tennessee Titans opted to retain first-year head coach Brian Callahan after a 3-14 season that has them positioned to select first overall in April’s draft. On the other hand, the organization did decide to bring in a new general manager: former Kansas City Chiefs assistant GM Mike Borgonzi. With the Chiefs in a position to potentially complete a three-peat of Super Bowl victories, Titans fans hope Borgonzi can help build out this roster and land a draft pick, similar to Kansas City.
Alongside Borgonzi in this process is President of Football Operations Chad Brinker, who recently spoke with the media regarding the outlook of this Titans roster. With a plethora of needs across the board and quarterback being one of them, his statement has fans questioning what the move could be at first overall.
“Can't pass on a generational talent and we won't do that,” Brinker said. While Miami Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward is the current betting favorite to land first overall in April, this recent quote could mean otherwise. With draft analysts not viewing Ward or Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders as “generational talents”, this quote could lead some to believe that the Titans might opt to take the dynamic two-way star Travis Hunter with their top selection.
Coming off a Heisman-winning season that also saw him win the Biletnikoff and Bednarik awards, Hunter is a player like no other with his elite two-way ability. While questions arise about whether a team would be willing to allow Hunter to play both sides, there’s no denying that if put in the right spot Hunter can contribute significantly.
If the Titans do opt to take Hunter first overall, they could still explore selecting a quarterback with a later selection or opt to sign a quarterback in free agency such as Sam Darnold. Regardless, this recent statement will have fans guessing and questioning who the Titans eventually will select, even if it’s a smokescreen by Tennessee to bait a team into trading up.
