NFL legend reveals what position Travis Hunter should stick with in the pros

Now that the College Football season has finished, all the attention will turn in the football community to April’s 2025 NFL Draft. As fans start to talk about which prospect they want to head to their favorite franchise, one name that will continuously be brought up through this process is Colorado Buffaloes two-way star Travis Hunter. Hunter had a historical 2024 campaign, highlighted by a Heisman trophy win to go along with the Biletnikoff and Bednarik awards.

While Hunter was able to dominate and play at an elite level on both sides of the ball with Colorado, the discourse over the past two seasons remains whether he can play both ways in the NFL. Based on his skill set and other factors, everyone in the media has made their case as to why Hunter should play one position over the other.

Recently, three-time All-Pro defensive back Patrick Peterson was asked about Hunter and which position he thinks he should play at the next level. While Peterson is regarded as one of the top corners in the 21st century, his response was not what you’d expect.

“I think you go as a receiver,” Peterson said. “Yeah, just because the way the money is right now as a receiver. I think just the needle is going towards that position. But I feel like he can be a guy that can change the narrative for a defensive back [to be paid].”

Looking into Peterson’s statement, there’s no denying the pay difference between top wide receivers versus cornerbacks in the NFL. The highest-paid wide receiver right now, Minnesota Vikings’ Justin Jefferson, currently makes $35 million per season. On the other hand, the highest-paid cornerback, Miami Dolphins’ Jalen Ramsey, comes in at $24.1 million per season which would be the 13th highest-paid wide receiver.

As mentioned though, Peterson does believe if Hunter were to commit to playing just defensive back, he could change the narrative for that position to receive higher compensation.
