After finally scoring in free agency with Anthony Santander, the Toronto Blue Jays could now pivot to fortifying the starting staff.
According to FanSided's Robert Murray, the Blue Jays are taking a hard look at bringing Max Scherzer north of the border. Murray made the report Wednesday on The Baseball Insiders podcast.
Scherer recently met with Toronto hierarchy via Zoom call, according to MLB Insider Jon Heyman. However, Heyman noted that Scherzer wanted to see how the Blue Jays' roster panned out this offseason before making a decision.
Spotrac projects Scherzer to command a one-year, $15.2 million contract for 2025. While not a power move such as Santander, he could be a low-risk, high-reward gamble for "Canada's Team."
The 17-year big-league veteran has been through the battles over his long career and can offer as much in knowledge and experience to a team once again looking to make a run at a championship in 2025.
Toronto's pitching staff currently features Kevin Gausman, Jose Berrios, and Chris Bassitt, along with Bowden Francis and Yariel Rodriguez. Signing Scherzer could allow the Blue Jays to move back into a swingman role.
Scherzer missed most of 2024 due to injuries. He made just nine starts with the Texas Rangers last season, going 2-4 with a 3.95 ERA.
While a team signing him can't expect the three-Cy Young version of his younger self, the 40-year-old still offers the promise of an experienced veteran able to deliver an ERA in the mid-3s even when he's not at his best.
