Gunther retired John Cena at WWE Saturday Night's Main Event by forcing him to tap out in his final match as an active wrestler. Although the outcome left the wrestling universe disappointed, it seems The Ring General isn't done yet. In a shocking twist, he might also end the career of a 76-year-old veteran for good.
Jerry Lawler is the name in question. The WWE legend has been battling health challenges over the years, but keeps coming back stronger. A report has revealed that he suffered a third stroke in September this year, having previously suffered the same ordeal in 2023 and in 2012 during an edition of Monday Night RAW.
Despite the setbacks, the 76-year-old veteran has revealed that his health struggles won't prevent him from returning to the squared circle for one more match. If he eventually comes back, many believe that Gunther could be the one to retire Lawler.
Having brought Goldberg's career to a close earlier this year and submitting John Cena in his final bout at SNME in Washington, D.C., it now looks like The Ring General has been awarded the role of retiring WWE veterans. That said, there is a strong possibility that the creative team might book the 38-year-old superstar to retire Jerry Lawler as well.
While this angle might sound convincing, it is speculative at this point. Only time will reveal who faces the WWE legend if he eventually returns to the ring for one more match.
Gunther could challenge CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship after Bron Breakker
Bron Breakker is set to face CM Punk on January 5, 2026, for the World Heavyweight Championship. That said, it seems like Gunther might be the next in line to challenge for the title after Breakker.
Considering that The Second City Saint has become champion after a long time, the gold might not switch hands so soon. As a result, The Dog of WWE will likely lose to Punk on RAW's first anniversary on Netflix. If this happens, The Ring General might set his sights on the world title afterward.
Gunther had a face-off with CM Punk on the latest episode of the red show. Moreover, they locked horns at SummerSlam 2025, where Punk defeated the Austrian. Since the two have unfinished business, the creative team could book them to lock horns again.
Given the hints, the company is seemingly hinting at developing a storyline between the superstars soon, and it could be for the World Heavyweight Championship. However, this angle is also speculative, and fans will have to wait and see what's next in the storyline.
