Giants predicted to take Ohio State star at 5th overall pick in 2026 NFL Draft

In recent years, picking an NFL prospect out of Ohio State has been a solid choice.

The Buckeyes continue to produce immense talents, and that'll be no different in the 2026 NFL Draft.

When the New York Giants come on the clock with the No. 5 overall pick, they'll have plenty of choices available to them, including multiple Buckeyes.

ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. does think they'll land on an Ohio State star, but which one?

His latest mock draft, unveiled Tuesday, has the Giants going for superstar safety Caleb Downs.

"The Giants have some options at safety -- including newly signed Jason Pinnock and Ar'Darius Washington -- but Downs is on another level," Kiper writes. "He's a complete football player, and New York should have no hesitation in taking him here (highest draft slot for a safety since Eric Berry in 2010). Putting him alongside Jevon Holland on the back end would help not only in creating turnovers (the Giants had 15 last season, 25th in the league) but also shoring up a very bad run defense."

In Kiper's mock draft, he already has OSU's Arvell Reese off the board with the No. 3 pick to the Arizona Cardinals.

He had QB Fernando Mendoza first, edge David Bailey second, then Reese, then RB Jeremiyah Love to the Titans.

That left Downs to the Giants for the fifth pick.

Kiper then has OSU's Sonny Styles seventh and Carnell Tate eighth. Yep, the Buckeyes have it going on.

The Giants would likely be very happy to get Downs, a player on a whole different level than most guys at the safety position in recent memory.
