Giants might not be sold on Jaxson Dart as their QB of the future

Jaxson Dart has been the biggest silver lining of an otherwise forgettable 2025 season for the New York Giants.

The Giants selected Dart in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft (25th overall) and he flashed some serious potential throughout his rookie campaign. Though he started the season on the bench behind veteran Russell Wilson, he ultimately assumed the starting spot and turned in some productive play.

Giants could consider drafting a quarterback at top of 2026 NFL Draft

On the season Dart has thrown for 1,835 yards and 13 touchdowns compared to five interceptions. He’s also added 407 yards and seven more TDs on the ground. Many figured that he secured his spot as New York’s quarterback of the future in the process, but that might not necessarily be the case.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Giants are expected to consider all options in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft. Obviously they wouldn’t be considering other options if they were completely sold on Dart being the guy moving forward. The Giants are projected to have the top overall pick in the ’26 draft.

"Expect them to evaluate all options [with the No. 1 overall pick], including looking at [Indiana quarterback] Fernando Mendoza before they make a decision on how they're going to proceed if they have this pick," Rapoport said on air.

It makes sense for the organization to do its due diligence, but this report probably came as a shock to fans in New York who already ran out and bought a Dart jersey.

When it comes to quarterbacks, it’s often difficult to make any definitive decisions one way or another after just a single season. The Giants would obviously know more about just how good Dart can be with a larger sample size, but it doesn’t always work that way.

If there’s a guy, like Mendoza, who the Giants feel better about than Dart when it comes to long-term outlook, perhaps they could look to go in a different direction. Either way, this is an interesting new story line to keep an eye on leading up to the draft for the Giants.
