FS1 analyst roasts 49ers over $60 million free agency signing

1 hour ago 2

When news filtered through that the San Francisco 49ers signed Mike Evans from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, for most, the move was great.

The 49ers got a veteran, dependable weapon for Brock Purdy, and it also eases the workload on the run game and Christian McCaffrey as well.

With $16.3 guaranteed per Ari Meirov, some think this is a one-year deal, so Evans might not be in the NFC West for another three years.

Still, it is seen as a good signing for the 49ers, but apparently, it isn't a good one, according to FS1's Colin Cowherd.

"The 49ers truly believe age is just a number," Cowherd said via Fox Sports." "Last year, when Seattle and San Francisco played for the final time, the Niners were the oldest team and the Seahawks were the fifth-youngest team. Seattle blew their doors off. So, in a division with a very athletic, young on defense Rams, and the very young Seahawks everywhere, I don't necessarily love adding a 30-year-old receiver who was banged up this past year.

"San Francisco's got some players that are older than the trolley cars in the city. Guys, you gotta get younger."

49ers add value with Evans signing

Cowherd is right, the 49ers do need to get younger.

But it is clear the franchise isn't going to spend $20+ million per season on one player.

So, Evans on $16 million is seen as a good piece of business, and with his veteran presence and ability to win downfield routes, could prove decisive for the 49ers.

But this is hardly a move for the future.

It is a win-now move for San Francisco as the franchise has gotten close several times without getting over the hump and winning a Super Bowl.

Will the move for Evans be enough? The 49ers sure hope so.
