Five-year Red Sox veteran starting pitcher has declined $21 million dollar qualifying offer; becomes free agent

Boston Red Sox veteran starter Nick Pivetta has declined his $21.05 million dollar qualifying offer, per Chris Cotillo. The big righty was with the Sox for the past five seasons, and will now enter free agency. It was also predicted he would decline his offer, so this is no surprise.

In his Boston career, Pivetta played in 131 games, and started 107 of them. He had a record of 37-41, an ERA of 4.29, and 718 strikeouts. He also had a 10.2 K/9, and a 3.2 BB/9.

With the Sox, Pivetta was a monster, and a liability. In some games, he would be borderline untouchable, and look like a Cy Young candidate. In others, he would have people wondering why he was on a major league team.

With Pivetta’s departure, the Sox are awarded a pick in this year’s draft. Because the Sox didn’t go over the $237 million payroll threshold, the Sox will get a pick in the third round or earlier.

Pivetta declining his offer means both Sox players with offers had theirs declined, with Pivetta declining his and outfielder Tyler O’Neill getting his declined by the Sox

Hopefully, Pivetta finds a home somewhere else, and it looks like he will. The Red Sox fandom thanks him for his service, and wishes him well.
