Finland bring their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign to an end when they play host to Malta at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium on Friday. Jacob Friis’ men head into the weekend on a run of six consecutive victories over the visitors since May 1991 and will be looking to extend this dominant streak.

Finland’s World Cup qualifying hopes suffered a crushing blow last time out as they fell to a 4-0 defeat against the Netherlands at the Johan Cruijff Arena on October 12.

Friis’ side have picked up 10 points from their seven matches in Group G to sit third in the table, three points behind second-placed Poland, who have one game in hand.

Finland now return to home soil, where they have won their most recent two matches, having lost each of the four games preceding this run since October 2024.

On the other hand, Malta suffered a 4-1 hammering against Bosnia and Herzegovina when the two nations squared off in a friendly at the Ta' Qali National Stadium on October 12.

This was in keeping with their performance in the World Cup qualifiers, where Emilio De Leo’s men have failed to win their six matches, losing four and claiming two draws to sit rock-bottom in the group table.

Malta’s struggles have come at both ends of the pitch, as they have netted just one goal so far while conceding 16 in their six matches so far.

Finland vs Malta Head-To-Head and Key Numbers

  • With six wins from the last nine meetings between the sides, Finland boast a clear upper hand in the history of this fixture.
  • Malta have picked up just one win in that time, while the two nations have settled for a share of the spoils on two occasions.
  • Finland have won each of their last six games against Malta and are on an eight-game unbeaten run in this fixture (6W 2D) since a 2-0 loss in their first encounter back in February 1988.
  • Malta have failed to win their most recent seven competitive matches, losing four and picking up three draws since a 1-0 victory over Moldova in October 2024.

Finland vs Malta Prediction

Six games into a dismal World Cup qualifying campaign, Malta are still chasing their first taste of victory and they are in for a tough 90 minutes against Finland, who have won each of their last six meetings.

Friis’ men boast the firepower needed to get the job done, and we are backing them to secure all three points this weekend.

Prediction: Finland 2-0 Malta
