ESPN reveals how Trent McDuffie trade helps Chiefs solve 1 big issue

1 hour ago 3

When the Kansas City Chiefs decided to trade away star corner Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams, many were unsure why the franchise decided to move on.

But as the details of the trade were revealed, it was easy to see. The Chiefs wanted more draft capital.

Plus, with McDuffie set for an extension, which some report will see him earn $30 million APY, that is money the Chiefs could use to fill out other areas of the roster.

And for ESPN's Ben Solak, that is exactly what Kansas City will do, and running back could be where those funds are poured into.

"That extra money will likely be directed at two key positions: running back and pass rusher,” Solak wrote. “Last year, Pacheco, the starting running back, didn't have a single carry of 20 or more yards. Fellow running back Kareem Hunt had one.

"The Chiefs are expected to target signing one of the top running back options, candidates such as Kenneth Walker III (Seattle Seahawks), Travis Etienne Jr. (Jacksonville Jaguars) and Tyler Allgeier (Atlanta Falcons).”

Who could Chiefs target?

We are sticking with running back, and it feels like free agency is where the Chiefs will look to fix their running back problem.

Will the franchise go big with someone like Kenneth Walker? Or will they go for someone a little cheaper, like Tyler Allegeier?

If there is an avenue for the Chiefs to sign Walker or even Travis Etienne, I think the franchise does it.

Getting a known commodity behind Patrick Mahomes is a surefire way to ensure the run game picks up dramatically from last offseason.

And trading McDuffie might be the reason why the Chiefs can get the star back they've been after for years.
