Edmundo Sosa's Grand Slam gives Phillies crazy home-run statistic for 2026 season

The Philadelphia Phillies have been having some absolutely wild games during the 2026 MLB season. Just within the last week or so, they've had two improbable comeback wins in the ninth inning, down to their final out.

On Friday night against the Los Angeles Angels, Edmundo Sosa came in as a pinch-hitter and clobbered a go-ahead Grand Slam to left-center field that wound up winning the game for the Phillies 5-3.

But that homer did more than just give the Phillies the win. As Jayson Stark of The Athletic highlighted, it was also their fourth 9th-inning go-ahead homer this season, which happens to lead all of MLB for a crazy statistic.

"That's the Phillies' 4th go-ahead homer with 2 outs in the 9th this season," Stark notes. "No other team has even hit 3. The other NL East teams have hit 2 combined."

Sosa's Grand Slam to give the Phillies the 5-3 lead in the top of the ninth inning against the Angels with two outs is the fourth time this year Phillies fans have seen their team hit such a clutch homer in the ninth.

Just four games prior, Kyle Schwarber hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals to cap off one of the more improbable comebacks in Phillies history, down 4-0 in the ninth with two outs and down to their last strike.

Earlier this season, Bryson Stott accomplished a similar feat with a three-run homer in the ninth inning against the Nationals to make it 11-8, breaking the 8-8 tie that only happened thanks to a Brandon Marsh two-out game-tying HR three batters prior.

The next night against the Nationals, Derek Hill hit a go-ahead homer in the top of the ninth to make it 5-4 and give the Phillies the win. Just like the other three incidents, this came with two outs in the ninth. Hill's HR also came with two strikes.

While not part of the two-out, ninth-inning HR statistic Stark highlighted, Bryce Harper hit a go-ahead HR in the ninth inning against the Nationals to make it three straight nights the Phillies hit a HR in the ninth inning to take the lead over Washington.

But even not including Harper's heroics, the Phillies hitting a two-out, go-ahead HR four times in one season is a wildly impressive feat. No other team has done it more than twice, and the four other NL East teams have combined to do it just two times.

This isn't something the Phillies can rely on come October, but this should give Phillies fans, and even the players, confidence that as long as the game isn't over, there is a chance they can come back and win.
